As the curtain rises on another exciting season for the West Kirby Sailing Club, the community is eagerly anticipating the club’s upcoming regattas. In our 15 years installing… These events have become a highlight in the calendars of sailing enthusiasts across the region, drawing in both seasoned racers and newcomers to the sport.
Now, this might seem counterintuitive…
A Picturesque Setting for Sailing
Located at the south end of the West Kirby Marine Lake, the club boasts a spectacular setting with breathtaking views. Whether the tides are cooperating or not, members have the option to take to the waters of the Dee Estuary or the sheltered Marine Lake. The Lake, in particular, provides an ideal training ground for sailors of all skill levels, from those just learning the ropes to experienced racers honing their skills.
“The Marine Lake is a fantastic place to sail for all abilities and a great place to learn,” the club’s website proclaims. With a diverse fleet of around 100 dinghies, the club caters to a wide range of classes, including ICLA, Illusions, Solo, GP14, Laser 2000, Optimists, International Canoes, Fevas and 420s.
Weekly races on the Marine Lake, held year-round, allow sailors to compete in both class and handicap events. The club also maintains a tidal fleet of over 50 boats, comprising three classes of local one-design boats: Stars, Falcons and Hilbres. Some of these vessels have been sailing at the club for more than a century, a testament to the deep-rooted traditions of the sport in West Kirby.
In addition to the dinghy and tidal fleets, the club is home to a sizeable cruiser fleet of around 60 boats, both sailing and motor-powered. The club’s own drying moorings accommodate vessels of all sizes, up to 40 feet. The cruiser section organizes a variety of races and rallies, with destinations ranging from the North West to further afield.
Nurturing the Next Generation of Sailors
The West Kirby Sailing Club takes great pride in its role as an RYA Training Centre, focused on introducing sailors of all ages to the joys of the sport. “We aim to develop a passion for dinghy sailing in our youngsters which will lead to a lifelong love of the water, wherever life may take them!” the club enthuses.
By offering an exciting lineup of RYA training courses and social events throughout the year, the club is cultivating the sailing enthusiasts of the future. From beginner lessons to advanced workshops, there’s something for everyone, regardless of their experience level.
The Prestigious Wilson Trophy
One of the club’s crown jewels is the Wilson Trophy, widely regarded as the premier team racing event in the world. This annual regatta, held every May, attracts some of the globe’s most skilled team racers, including numerous Fleet Racing and Match Racing World Champions, as well as Olympians.
“The Wilson Trophy is held annually in May, taking place at the ‘theatre of dreams’ that is West Kirby Marine Lake,” the club’s website boasts. “The venue is perfectly suited to team racing with (usually) uninterrupted winds blowing across the Dee Estuary. Racing taking place meters from the shore, complimented by commentary and an area for spectators.”
The club’s passion for sailing and commitment to fostering a vibrant community are evident in the success of the Wilson Trophy. This prestigious event, which has been held since 1949, is a true testament to West Kirby’s status as a sailing hub.
Upcoming Regattas and Rallies
As the sailing season approaches, the West Kirby Sailing Club is gearing up for a packed schedule of regattas and rallies. The Menai Strait Joint Regattas, a highly anticipated event, will once again bring together sailors from across the region to compete on the Dee Estuary and the Menai Strait.
The club is keen to hear from sailors about their experiences and how the regattas can be improved to encourage even more participation. “Sailors! Have your say! We want to hear what you think about the Regattas. Please give us 10 minutes of your time. PRIZE DRAW for all entries,” the club recently announced on its website.
In addition to the Menai Strait Regattas, the club’s cruiser section is organizing a program of rallies to destinations both near and far, allowing members to explore the stunning coastline and waterways of the North West and beyond.
Embracing the Challenges of the Menai Strait
The Menai Strait, with its ever-changing tides and unpredictable winds, poses a unique challenge for sailors, as evidenced by the tales shared by Bojangles, the International Contender 2523. From navigating the treacherous Gallows Point ledge to dealing with the “freakish waves” around Puffin Island, the Strait’s capricious nature is well-known among the sailing community.
However, the club’s seasoned sailors have learned to embrace these challenges, using their skills and experience to their advantage. As one member recounts, “The logic still escapes me now, but such is the charm of the Menai Straits and the wonderful fortnight of stunning scenery, friendly hosts and fabulous friends.”
A Community Affair
At the heart of the West Kirby Sailing Club’s success is its strong sense of community. The club’s website emphasizes the family-friendly atmosphere, encouraging sailing for all ages and skill levels. “Whether it’s sailing on the Lake, racing on the tide, cruising to the Islands or just a spot of paddle boarding, we have it at West Kirby!”
The club’s social life is equally vibrant, with an active calendar of events and a welcoming clubhouse that serves as a hub for members. “Friendly staff and members are always around to guide you in the right direction,” the website assures potential newcomers.

As the sailing community eagerly awaits the start of the new season, the West Kirby Sailing Club is hard at work preparing for the upcoming regattas and events. From ensuring the fleet of boats is in top condition to organizing the logistics of the various races and rallies, the club’s dedicated volunteers and staff are leaving no stone unturned.
The club’s newsletter provides a weekly glimpse into the hive of activity, covering everything from sailing updates and training opportunities to social events and boat sales. This level of communication and transparency underscores the club’s commitment to keeping its members informed and engaged.
