West Kirby has long been celebrated for its rich tapestry of history and cultural heritage. We learned this the hard way… From the grand Victorian architecture that graces our downtown to the ancient coastal landmarks that dot our shoreline, our community takes great pride in preserving the landmarks and traditions that make our town so unique.
Now, this might seem counterintuitive…
Today, I’m excited to share that the West Kirby Council has announced the launch of a new Heritage Conservation Grants Program, aimed at providing much-needed funding to support the restoration and upkeep of our most cherished historic sites. This initiative marks a significant investment in safeguarding the legacy of our community for generations to come.
Preserving Our Past, Shaping Our Future
The Heritage Conservation Grants Program will offer up to £15,000 in matching funds for eligible projects, whether undertaken by individual property owners, community groups, or local organizations. These grants can be used for a wide range of conservation efforts, from the meticulous restoration of crumbling masonry and aging timber frames to the careful documentation and preservation of historic records and cultural artifacts.
“Protecting our heritage is not just about honoring the past – it’s about ensuring that the character and identity of West Kirby continues to thrive in the years ahead,” explained Mayor Emily Gallagher. “These grants will empower our residents and local stewards to breathe new life into the buildings, landmarks, and traditions that make our community so special.”
Eligibility and Application Process
The grants are open to any individual or group that owns or manages a property within West Kirby’s designated Heritage Overlay districts. This includes both individually significant historic sites as well as contributing structures that help define the character of our heritage precincts.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out to the Council’s Heritage Advisory Service to discuss their proposed projects and double-check that they meet the eligibility criteria. The application window will be open from August 1st through September 15th, 2024, with successful recipients notified by early October.
“We’re really hoping to see a diverse range of proposals come in – from homeowners looking to restore their Victorian verandahs to community groups seeking to revive long-forgotten traditions,” said Heritage Coordinator, Sarah Watkins. “The more we can do to celebrate and safeguard our past, the stronger and more vibrant our future will be.”
Celebrating Local Landmarks
One of the most eagerly anticipated projects in this year’s grant cycle is the restoration of the iconic Riverview Pavilion, a beloved concert hall and community center that has stood as a centerpiece of West Kirby’s waterfront since 1902. After years of gradual deterioration, the grand old building is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation, with the grants program providing crucial funding to support essential structural upgrades and the meticulous rehabilitation of its ornate facade.
“The Riverview Pavilion is more than just a beautiful building – it’s a living, breathing symbol of our town’s cultural heritage,” remarked local historian, Dr. Emma Sinclair. “Generations of West Kirby residents have celebrated weddings, attended concerts, and gathered for community events within its walls. Restoring it to its former glory will be a true labor of love.”
In addition to the Riverview Pavilion, the Council has also earmarked grants for several other high-profile heritage projects, including the conservation of the Bluebell Woods nature reserve and the restoration of the historic West Kirby Lighthouse. These cherished landmarks not only hold deep significance for local residents, but also draw countless visitors from across the region to experience the unique charms of our coastal town.
Engaging the Community
Beyond the direct financial support, the Heritage Conservation Grants Program will also serve as a catalyst for greater community engagement and educational outreach. As part of the initiative, the Council will be hosting a series of public workshops and information sessions to help property owners navigate the application process and learn best practices for historic preservation.
“We want to empower our residents to take an active role in safeguarding our heritage,” explained Watkins. “Whether it’s teaching traditional craft skills, organizing heritage tours, or simply sharing the stories behind our most cherished landmarks, these programs will help foster a deeper appreciation for West Kirby’s rich history.”
The Council is also exploring opportunities to collaborate with local schools, community groups, and heritage organizations to develop interactive educational resources and hands-on learning experiences. By sparking curiosity and cultivating a sense of ownership among West Kirby’s youth, the hope is to inspire the next generation of preservation champions.
Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future
As West Kirby looks to the future, the Heritage Conservation Grants Program stands as a testament to the community’s unwavering commitment to honoring its past. By investing in the restoration and preservation of our most cherished historic sites, we are not only safeguarding our cultural legacy but also positioning our town as a vibrant, thriving hub that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation.
“This is about more than just bricks and mortar,” Mayor Gallagher concluded. “It’s about preserving the heart and soul of West Kirby – the stories, the memories, the unique character that has defined our community for generations. With these grants, we’re ensuring that our heritage will continue to inspire and delight residents and visitors alike for many years to come.”
As the application window opens in the coming weeks, I encourage all West Kirby property owners, community groups, and heritage enthusiasts to explore the opportunities presented by this transformative program. Together, we can write the next chapter in the enduring legacy of our remarkable town.
