WKMTC returns to the Floral Pavilion Theatre in New Brighton with a brand new version of this hugely popular musical by the creative team from ABBA, in conjunction with Tim Rice, one of the greatest musical lyricists of all time.

At the height of the Cold War, two of the world’s greatest chess masters, the American Freddie Trumper and the serious Russian champion, Anatoly Sergievsky, arrive in Merano for their World Chess Championship match. As their battle for the world title gets under way, they are both in danger of becoming the pawns of their governments.

Simultaneously, their lives are thrown into further confusion by Freddie’s second, the former Hungarian refugee Florence Vassy, who becomes the centre of an emotional love triangle when she falls for the Russian.

From Italy to Thailand, the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves, mirroring the heightened passions of the political struggles that threaten to destroy lives and loves in this story of passion, betrayal, politics and a board game. And all set to the beating pulse of a breathtakingly lush, compelling rock score which includes such great songs as “Nobody’s side”, “Pity the child”, “Anthem”, the international hit single “One night in Bangkok” and the show-stopping “I know him so well”.
